Rejected by woman, man kidnaps her 5-year-old daughter in Mumbai, arrested

The Mumbai police arrested a man onboard a train while he was trying to kidnap the 5-year-old daughter of a woman he wanted to marry. The accused was in love with the woman and wanted to get married to her despite facing rejection. The 5-year-old lived with her parents and an elder brother in the Kamathipura area in Mumbai. The woman, a 28-year-old housewife, woke up on Tuesday morning to find her daughter missing. She filed a missing complaint and told the police that she suspects a man who had been forcing her to get married to him. The accused, identified as Rotin Ghosh, is a 35-year-old resident of West Bengal, police said. Police officials formed multiple teams to search for the child and the accused. They raided several trains across railway stations in the city, Zone 3 Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Akbar Pathan said. "We first searched two trains, the Amritsar Express and the Howrah Express. But the accused was not found. However, our teams deployed at CSMT and LTT stations received input that since he is a West Bengal native, and he could be aboard the Shalimar Express train. We began our search accordingly, using help from RPF (Railway Protection Force) and local police,” the DCP said. “After two unsuccessful attempts, we found the accused when the train approached Shegaon in Buldhana. He was inside the bathroom, hiding with the minor girl. The Nagpada police team safely rescued the child and city Police Commissioner Vivek Phansalkar has handed her over to the parents," he said. The 5-year-old was kidnapped in her sleep. Police suspect that the child also did not raise a hue or cry because she was acquainted with the accused. Rotin Ghosh has been remanded to police custody and an investigation into the case is underway.
