An altercation between the restaurant staff and four men including the deceased, Mohammed Liyaqat, a businessman from Chandrayangutta, snowballed into a brawl on Sunday late at night
Five staffers including the manager of a popular biryani joint in Hyderabad have been detained and two police officers, including a sub-inspector of Panjagutta police station, were placed under suspension after a 32-year-old man died Sunday midnight.
An altercation between the restaurant staff and four men including the deceased, Mohammed Liyaqat, a businessman from Chandrayangutta, snowballed into a brawl on Sunday late at night, following which the local cops shifted all of them to the police station for inquiry. Liyaqat, who sustained visibly no external injuries, collapsed there and was rushed to a nearby private hospital where he was declared dead.
Hyderabad police commissioner C V Anand suspended Panjagutta sub-inspector Shiva Shankar and constable Shankar for dereliction of duties. The police said Liyaqat, along with nine of his friends, ordered mutton biryani and asked for extra serving of ‘raita’.
Reportedly drunk at the time, they lost their temper on the staff’s curt response and this led to an argument and then fight. The police were called by the restaurant manager and both the parties were taken to the police station. Liyaqat and friends told the police that the waiter behaved rudely and abused them when asked for ‘extra raita’ and this led to the fight.
At the police station, Liyaqat started to develop uneasiness and collapsed as he spoke to the police officers. He was rushed to a hospital for treatment and died there. An FIR under section 302 (murder) is registered against five people employed with the restaurant. “The cause of death will be known after receiving the postmortem report. We have named five people in the FIR, they are being arrested,” said a police officer, adding that the case is under investigation.
