After highest-ever suspensions, only 93 INDIA bloc MPs left in Parliament

After a series of suspensions of MPs from Parliament since last Thursday, the Opposition benches in the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha have thinned down considerably.

A total of 143 MPs from both the Houses have been suspended for the rest of the Winter Session so far, mostly over their demand for Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s statement on the December 13 Parliament security breach followed by a discussion on the matter. This marks the highest-ever suspensions in a Parliament session.

But the ruling BJP has pushed on with legislative business despite the suspensions, including taking up for consideration and passing the three Bills seeking to overhaul the criminal laws, and the passage of the Central Goods and Services Tax (Second Amendment) Bill and the National Capital Territory of Delhi Laws (Special Provisions) Second (Amendment) Bill on Tuesday.

Of the total 143 suspended MPs, 97 are from the Lok Sabha and 46 from the Rajya Sabha, comprising the members of the Opposition INDIA bloc except Danish Ali, the BSP’s Lok Sabha member, who was recently suspended from his party for “anti-party activities”.
